Our Future Direction
The Cambridge Preservation Society has a history of nearly 80 years of which it can be proud.  That Cambridge remains such an attractive place to live, work and visit is in part due to the influence of the Society over the decades in protecting the historic ambience and green setting of the City.

However with the increasing developing pressures facing the City, there is a concern that the Society's effectiveness in responding to these pressures is not keeping pace.  The Society has a well-earned reputation for the management of informal green open space for the benefit of the local communities, which we need to expand, but our profile within the Cambridge area, even amongst professional people who might be expected to be concerned about the future of their city, is low. The Board of Trustees is committed to building the Society's operational and fundraising capacity so as to generate a stable financial platform for future growth.

Our
Strategic Plan sets out how we intend to deliver this re-invigoration.  It includes:
· a long-term (c25 years) planning framework in a new Vision and Mission statement that will provide continuity and consistency to our development
· a suite of six medium-term (5 years) strategic priorities for our immediate development:
Expanding our role in the management of informal
Green Spaces

Strengthening our Planning Activities
  Maintaining our portfolio of
Historic Buildings
  Expanding our
Educational Activities
  Raising the
Profile and Membership of the Society
  Building the internal
Organisational Resources
· a listing of the key activities to be implemented over the next 5 years to deliver each strategic objectives from which the annual operating plan will be derived.

The Society must raise its game if Cambridge is to retain its special character.  The Board is determined that the citizens of tomorrow will continue to benefit from the activities of the Society in the same way that we today benefit from the foresight of our predecessors in preserving - Wandlebury, Grantchester Meadows, the countryside around Coton and the historic buildings in our care.

Historic Buildings Grant Fund
The Cambridge Preservation Society has entered into partnership with the City  Council to provide a special fund for the restoration and repair of historic buildings. The fund enables owners to apply for grants to help defray the costs of work to Listed Buildings and other structures. Examples of grants paid to date include:

  • repairs to the bell-tower of the church of St George
  • repairs to the Museum of Technology
  • reinstating railings in Maids Causeway
  • repairs to joinery and brickwork on a house in Storey's Way
  • repairs to the windows of a house in Panton St.
  • the restoration of 'Reality checkpoint, the lamp standard on Parker's Piece.
